Newcastle Thematic History

Newcastle Thematic History

Tuesday 4 November 2025

The City of Newcastle's draft Newcastle Thematic History submissions have been received and are being reviewed by Council. The Newcastle Thematic History will be presented to Council for adoption early 2026.

This document outlines key themes in the city’s cultural and historical development, helping planners, developers, and property owners understand the heritage significance of different areas. It serves as a valuable tool for guiding sensitive development that respects Newcastle’s unique identity and historical context.

Did you know that if your property is heritage listed or located within a conservation area, any remedial works or alterations to the building will likely require Council approval? In many cases, these works can qualify to be assessed under a Heritage Maintenance Application, which is a streamlined application process and an alternate means of gaining Council's approval instead of submitting a Development Application (DA).

Our Town Planning Team can review your proposed works to ensure they meet the exemption criteria and manage the entire application process on your behalf, so you can undertake the proposed works with peace of mind that you have gained consent.
